GDMBR day 36 – Sunday, August 20,2023

Total miles- 1369.90 Total ascent – 89,476 ft

What an awesome day!!! We are finally back in an area with trees! The main tree in this part of Colorado is a Poplar, Populus tremuloides or Quaking Aspen. We started off the day riding down a road called Aspen Alley. Unfortunately many of these aspens are dying due to old age.

An Aspen grove, they remind me of Dr. Seuss trees
Robert and Behrooz riding down Aspen Alley
Seeing some of the mountains to come.
Taking a roadside break
Enough said
Going through a small canyon
Look at how that rock was thrust up!
A slice of heaven

Our route took us right past Brush Mountain Lodge, a very iconic part of the Great Divide Route. I have been hearing about this place and Kirsten, the woman who runs it for years. She is the epitome of a trail angel, opening up her property to bikers coming through and feeding them, washing their laundry and providing a very warm and welcoming haven for an hour or the night. She doesn’t charge anyone, it’s all pay what you can.

Kirsten and me
Right away she brought out ice water and cold drinks and then pizza!
Her front porch was very
inviting
There were many hummingbird feeders and hummingbirds
It really made my day getting to stop here and meet Kirsten
We passed a meadow full of mullein, the spiky plant
A much healthier alley of Aspen
We got fairly high today, lots of climbing, some hike a bike and a rough 5 mile descent. Whew!
